Introduction / History

The Valmiki Mehtar, also known as Balmiki Mehtar, are part of the broader Dalit community in India. The term Mehtar means "prince" or "leader," though ironically, their traditional occupation has been among the most marginalized—sweeping and scavenging. They are classified as a scheduled caste, and their identity is closely tied to the legacy of Hindu Saint Valmiki, the revered author of the Ramayana.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Many Valmiki Mehtar still work in sanitation-related jobs, often employed as sweepers or scavengers. These roles are stigmatized within the Hindu caste system, contributing to ongoing social exclusion. While some have secured government jobs, education levels remain low, and economic mobility is limited. However, there are signs of progress, with increasing access to education and advocacy for dignity and rights.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Almost all Valmiki Mehtars are Hindu. Their Hindu religious practices include worship of Hindu deities, temple visits, and participation in festivals such as Diwali, Holi, Navratri, and Rama Navami. Their spiritual worldview is often shaped by popular Hinduism, which emphasizes ritual offerings and temple worship rather than personal relationships with deities.

The Valmiki Mehtars require educational and economic empowerment to break the cycle of poverty.
