Introduction / History

The Kui tribes are primarily found in Odisha in eastern India. They are part of the larger Kondh (or Khond) tribal community. Their traditional language has given way to Odia, the language of Odisha.

Historically, Kui tribes have resisted submitting to outsiders, be they Hindus, Muslims, or British.

There are several Kui subgroups; among them are the Sitha Kuis.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Sitha Kuis are subsistence farmers who grow rice, lentils, corn, ragi, and vegetables for most of their food. They raise livestock and men hunt for their meat. Kuis enjoy seasonal fruits like mangos, jackfruits, and tamarind.

Sitha Kui families are nuclear, and women have more power than one would expect, but there is a bride price before weddings can happen.

They enjoy music, dance, storytelling, and especially festivals. Kuis often combine festivals with the harvests of rice, new bean crops, and roasted mahua.

What Are Their Beliefs?

At one time, Sitha Kuis made human sacrifices, but now they sacrifice a buffalo instead. They have always worshiped ancestral spirits, nature spirits, and the Earth Goddess was central to their belief system. These are being replaced by Hinduism and Christianity, often in a syncretistic way.

What Are Their Needs?

Alcohol plays a major part in their lives, which often holds communities back. Money that could go towards education, for example, usually gets siphoned off for alcohol. Alcohol also causes family problems.

Prayer Points

Pray for the Lord to give Kuis hope and internal peace that will replace alcohol.
Pray for the Lord to show himself powerful to Sitha Kui families and villages, so they will know he holds the power over the entire spirit world.
Pray that soon Sitha Kui disciples will make more disciples.
Pray for the Holy Spirit to help them understand God’s ways and draw hundreds into a close relationship with the only Savior.
