Black Panamanians are descendants of two major groups. First there were African slaves brought during the Spanish colonial period. Afro-Caribbean immigrants, mainly from Jamaica and Barbados, arrived in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to work on the Panama Canal and the railroad. Most live in Panama City, Colón, and Caribbean coastal towns.
Black Panamanians have played a vital role in shaping Panama’s infrastructure, culture, and identity, especially in urban centers and along the Caribbean coast. They are active in government, education, service industries, agriculture, and fishing.Cultural life is vibrant, with strong traditions in music (Congo, Calypso), dance (Tamborito), and cuisine.Family and community ties are strong, often centered around churches and cultural organizations.
The majority are Roman Catholic, though Protestant denominations are also prominent.Religious life is deeply woven into community events, festivals, and family traditions. Some Afro-Caribbean spiritual practices and Creole expressions of faith persist in certain communities.
Racial discrimination and social exclusion continue to affect access to education, employment, and political representation. Economic inequality is prevalent, especially in Colón and rural areas. Youth empowerment, job training, and cultural preservation are critical areas for development. There is a need for greater recognition of their historical contributions and cultural identity.
Pray for strong spiritual leadership and vibrant churches that serve both physical and spiritual needs.Pray for youth and families to find hope, purpose, and support in Christ.Pray for healing and justice in the face of racial and social discrimination.Pray for economic opportunities and sustainable development in Afro-Panamanian communities.Pray for unity and reconciliation among Panama’s diverse ethnic groups.
