Introduction / History

The Fanter people, also known as Fantefolk or Skoyere, are an indigenous ethnic minority in Norway. They are part of the Romani people cluster, though distinct from the Romanisæl (Tater) group. Historically, the Fanter were nomadic, traveling by foot, horse-drawn carts, and boats along the southern and southwestern coastlines of Norway. Their language, Norwegian Traveller (Rodi), is a unique dialect with lexical borrowings from German Rotwelsch and Romani, reflecting historical interactions with Yenish and Romani groups.Despite centuries of marginalization, the Fanter have preserved their language, traditions, and identity, resisting assimilation into larger Romani populations.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Traditionally, the Fanter lived as travelers, engaging in crafts, trade, and seasonal labor. Today, many have settled but continue to face social exclusion, economic hardship, and limited access to education and healthcare. Their communities are often misunderstood and stigmatized, leading to challenges in employment and integration.Cultural practices such as oral storytelling, music, and craftsmanship remain vital to their identity. However, modern pressures and historical discrimination have led to a decline in traditional lifestyles.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Fanter are predominantly Christian. Their faith is often intertwined with cultural traditions, and while many attend mainstream churches, there is a need for spiritual renewal and biblical discipleship within the community. Like other people in Europe, they are often nominal in their faith.A minority (10%) still practices ethnic religions, which may include ancestral reverence and folk beliefs passed down through generations.

What Are Their Needs?

Although most identify as Christian, there is a need for discipleship, Bible teaching, and community-based ministry.Fanters continue to experience discrimination and marginalization. Advocacy and education are needed to promote understanding and inclusion. The Rodi language is endangered. Documentation and revitalization efforts could help preserve this unique linguistic heritage.Improved access to education, healthcare, and employment opportunities is essential for community development.
