Chamling in Nepal

Introduction / History

The Chamling people of Nepal are a subgroup of the Kirat ethnic community, primarily residing in eastern Nepal, especially in districts like Khotang, Bhojpur, and Udayapur. Their language, Chamling, is part of the Kiranti branch of the Sino-Tibetan family and is considered endangered due to declining fluency among younger generations.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Most Chamling people engage in subsistence agriculture, cultivating crops like millet, maize, and rice. Animal husbandry is also common. In recent years, some have migrated to urban areas or abroad for work, but many still rely on traditional farming and forest-based livelihoods.

What Are Their Beliefs?

A unique aspect of Chamling society is the role of the Nachhung, or shaman. The Nachhung serves as a spiritual guide and healer, interpreting dreams, conducting rituals, and maintaining harmony between the natural and spiritual worlds. What Are Their Needs?

Chamlings need the spiritual hunger it takes to seek, find, and embrace Christ no matter how much community pressure there is to conform to spiritual traditions.
