Introduction / History

Thovois are a small, indigenous community located exclusively in the state of Goa, India. They are indigenous to Goa, and they have cultural ties to the native language of that state, Konkani.

Historically, the Thovois were likely among the many Goan communities that underwent religious transformation during the Portuguese colonial period, which began in the early 16th century. The Portuguese influence led to widespread conversion to Roman Catholicism, and the Thovoi became part of Goa’s vibrant Catholic heritage.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Thovio live in both rural and urban areas of Goa. Their lifestyle reflects a blend of traditional Goan culture and Christian values. Many are engaged in occupations such as agriculture, fishing, government service, and small-scale business. Community life often revolves around the church, with festivals, feasts, and religious observances playing a central role.

Their homes and villages are typically well-integrated into the broader Goan society, and they benefit from the state’s relatively high literacy rates and access to public services.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Thovois are 100% Christian, with the majority identifying as Roman Catholic. Their faith is deeply rooted in centuries of Christian tradition, and they actively participate in church life, including mass, sacraments, and community service. Their religious practices are often intertwined with Goan cultural expressions, such as music, dance, and cuisine, especially during major Christian festivals like Christmas, Easter, and Feast of St. Francis Xavier.

What Are Their Needs?

Thovio churches need spiritual renewal and deeper biblical engagement. Churches need to train disciples to make more disciples.
