Introduction / History
The Akeles have several other names. They only live in Gabon. They speak Kele, a Northwestern Bantu language. At one time they were skilled hunters who used their stealth to capture slaves to sell.
What Are Their Lives Like?
Akeles farm and fish along the Ogooué and Ngounie rivers.
Like many peoples in West Africa, the Akeles are dealing with a situation where the Chinese are buying their resources through government contracts which often don’t consider the needs of the local population.
One of the ways for a man to find a wife is to have his family kidnap his future wife. Some of the Akele music is for wedding ceremonies, but music plays an important role in other areas as well. Other kinds of music are for ceremonies, and still others are for fun and dancing.
What Are Their Beliefs?
Akeles are mainly Roman Catholic with an Evangelical minority. Religion is laced with traditional religion which offers allegiance to ancestral spirits.
What Are Their Needs?
Akele churches, families, and individuals need to put complete faith in Jesus Christ. As it stands, most are double minded.
