Introduction / History

Pasis are an Adi-speaking tribe in Arunachal Pradesh. They are Dalits, which means they have low status in Hindu society. At one time, they were toddy tappers, extracting palm sap to make a fermented drink. That is still part of their identity, and some still do it, even though it’s illegal.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Today, most Pasis are manual laborers, government employees, and small-scale businessmen.

Their families are nuclear and patriarchal. Pasis have many clans such as the Baghos, Kenchos, and Sapos. For recreation they have festivals loaded with folk traditions.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Most are Hindus, though their beliefs can also be described as animistic. Their traditions remain strong, though about one out of ten are now Christian.

What Are Their Needs?

Pasis face discrimination and prejudice, especially those who persist in producing toddy. They need to find productive ways to earn a living.

Prayer Points

Pray for the Lord to show Pasi leaders new ways to make a living.
Pray for evangelists and church planters to go to the Pasis with the gospel.
Pray for the Holy Spirit to move in Pasi families and settlements, turning their hearts to the King of kings.
Pray for Pasi disciples who will make more disciples.
