Introduction / History

Yimchungra is one of the Naga groups. They live in northeastern India and speak the Yimchungru Naga dialect. Most live in the Tuensang and Kiphire districts.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Yimchungras are primarily farmers who grow millet, rice, corn, and vegetables. They also raise pigs, cattle, and chickens. Families supplement their income by making and selling woven handicrafts and small-scale trade.

Extended families live near one another, and the patriarch makes decisions. Women do farm labor and manage the household.

Those with wealth host large feasts where they distribute food and gifts to community members. That gives them great honor and respect. Women wear beautiful, colorful shawls during festivals. Patterns in their clothes indicate their social rank and personal achievements.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Their traditional beliefs involved reverence for nature spirits—trees, rivers, and mountains. They appeased the spirits for protection and prosperity. Most are now Christian, especially Baptist, but traditional beliefs persist.

What Are Their Needs?

Roads are poor in their area, hampering their ability to trade and get emergency medical care. Better roads and education would improve their lives a great deal.

Prayer Points

Pray for hundreds to be raised up with a defiant faith in Christ, one that will not be shaken, no matter what comes their way.
Pray for God to bring about his purpose for the Yimchungra people.
Pray for Christians to have love, joy, peace, and patience as they tell others about the King of kings.
Pray for a mighty Holy Spirit revival to permeate their families and churches, drawing them into greater love for God and for their neighbors.
