Introduction / History

Simongs are small Adi subgroup living in the Upper Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh, northeast India.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Simongs practice subsistence agriculture, growing rice, corn, and vegetables using traditional methods. Some also fish, hunt, and gather forest products for their own use and to sell for cash.

They have is tight-knit families with elders playing a central role in decision-making. They speak Adi at home, but Hindi outside the home. Hindi is the language of schooling, so the younger generation makes sure they master this language.

The Jihang Festival, or Poisoned Arrow Festival, is a major annual event that celebrates ancestral bravery and community unity. It involves the symbolic use of poisoned arrows and is accompanied by music, dance, and ritual storytelling.

What Are Their Beliefs?

While they have been exposed to Hinduism and Christianity, most have retained their indigenous spiritual practices, which are passed down orally and practiced communally during festivals and life events.

What Are Their Needs?

Like most agricultural peoples of India, the Simongs need better roads, which would open them to access to medical care, schools, and better trade opportunities.

Pray for God to bring about his purpose for the Simong people.
Pray for hundreds to be raised up with a defiant faith in Christ, one that will not be shaken, no matter what comes their way.
Pray for Christians to have love, joy, peace, and patience as they tell others about the King of kings.
Pray for a powerful Holy Spirit revival to permeate Simong families and churches, drawing them into greater love for God and for their neighbors.
