The Sangtam are one of the major Naga ethnic groups in Northeast India, primarily residing in Tuensang and Kiphire districts of Nagaland. Oral traditions suggest that their ancestors may have migrated from Mongolia through China, possibly participating in the construction of the Great Wall. Their name and identity are deeply rooted in the Naga tribal heritage, and they are known for preserving both traditional and Christian practices.
The Sangtam people traditionally practice jhum cultivation (shifting agriculture), which remains central to their livelihood. Villages are organized around clan systems, and community life is vibrant, with strong kinship ties. They are known for their craftsmanship, indigenous architecture, and cultural festivals. Modern education and infrastructure are gradually improving, though many still live in remote areas.
While Christianity is the dominant religion, many Sangtam retain elements of their traditional animistic beliefs, often blending them with Christian practices. Evangelical Protestantism is the most common denomination. Churches play a central role in community life, and religious festivals are widely celebrated.
Almost all Sangtams identify as Christian, but there is a problem with nominalism. They need the Holy Spirit to renew them and for biblically-based discipleship.
On an economic level, they need access to healthcare and education. Better roads will help.
Pray for spiritual maturity and discipleship among Sangtam believers.
Ask God to raise up local leaders and pastors with strong biblical foundations.
Pray for improved access to education and healthcare.
Pray for peace and unity among Naga tribes.
