Introduction / History

Noliyas are a Hindu group living in the coastal regions where Andhra Pradesh and Odisha come together. They have alternate names like Jalari or Nolli. They have a strong sense of community identity.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Most remain fishermen, but a small number have had to give up fishing and become day laborers in inland areas. Noliyas who fish for a living also make fishing nets, repair boats, and process the fish after a catch.

Noliya children play games on the beaches. Their elders enjoy festivals filled with music, dance, feasting, and storytelling.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Noliyas syncretize their traditional beliefs with Hindu ones. Over three-fourths are Hindu, but they also have a Christian minority.

What Are Their Needs?

Noliyas have been a fishing community for over 150 years, but their lifestyle is now being challenged by the tourist industry, which threatens to move them from their fishing grounds.

Prayer Points

Pray for God’s justice and mercy for Noliya fishing communities.
Pray for the Lord to give them a plentiful harvest of fish as a testimony of how power and goodness.
Pray for Christians to teach stories from the New Testament that involve fishing and fishermen.
Pray for a spiritual hunger among Noliya family leaders that will open them to putting all their faith in Jesus Christ.
