Introduction / History

Nocte is one of the Naga tribes that live in Arunachal Pradesh, India. They were headhunters until the 1950s. This practice was guided by divination, and it symbolized bravery, and provided high status to Nocte men. Noctes also enhanced their status through tattoos and ear stretching. Chiefs and other high-status men had multiple wives.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Noctes are farmers, but fishing and hunting make up a large part of their diet. Hunting is part of the identity of Nocte men. They prefer wild meat over domestically raised meat. They earn money by making and selling goods made from bamboo, cane, and other natural materials.

Chalo Loku is their harvest festival, celebrated with music, dance, feasting, and rituals. Other agricultural festivals include Oriah and Ronghoan.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Traditionally, the Noctes worshipped nature spirits and a sky deity. They syncretize these beliefs with those of Buddhism, Hinduism, and Christianity. Almost two-thirds identify as Christian, but they need spiritual renewal.

What Are Their Needs?

There is no future in subsistence farming augmented by hunting. The Noctes will need advanced education so they can find urban employment.

Prayer Points

Pray for the Lord to show the Noctes new ways to earn a living as the 21st century progresses.
Pray for a complete and accurate Bible in the Nocte language.
Pray for many Nocte elders and other influential men and women to have the spiritual hunger it takes to embrace Christ and forsake all others.
Pray for the Holy Spirit to send revival fire to Nocte churches and families.
