Introduction / History

Pondicherry (AKA, Puducherry) is the one part of India that was once a French colony. It was a trading post for the French East India Company until they took it as a colony. The French once faced threats from Dutch colonial interests, but it was the British who took the entire subcontinent as their colony. Pondicherry fell to them in the late 1850s. India gained independence in 1947, and ultimately Pondicherry became part of the new/old nation. It is a union territory surrounded by the state of Tamil Nadu.France left their cultural mark through the French language and the Roman Catholic Church. Today, Pondicherrians are often Roman Catholic. They speak Tamil, the language of Tamil Nadu.
