The Mahar community is one of the largest Scheduled Castes in Maharashtra, with smaller populations in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Karnataka. They primarily speak Marathi, though some also speak Hindi and Kannada depending on their region. Historically, the Mahars were considered "untouchables" and faced severe caste-based discrimination. In the 19th and 20th centuries, many Mahars converted to Christianity through Protestant missionary efforts, particularly the Methodist and Presbyterian churches. These conversions were often motivated by a desire for social dignity, education, and spiritual liberation.
Mahar Christians live in rural villages, urban slums, and semi-urban areas. Many work as laborers, farmers, municipal workers, or in low-income service jobs. Despite facing economic challenges, some have benefited from education, government reservations, and church-based support systems. Their communities are often close-knit, with churches serving as hubs for spiritual, educational, and social activities. However, caste-based discrimination still affects their access to opportunities and social mobility.
Mahar Christians are predominantly Protestant, with a strong presence of Methodist, Presbyterian, and Pentecostal denominations. Their faith emphasizes personal salvation, Bible study, and community worship. Churches play a central role in their lives, offering Sunday services, youth ministries, and discipleship programs. While their Christian identity is strong, some cultural practices from their pre-Christian heritage may still influence their traditions.
Mahar Christians need spiritual growth through discipleship and deeper engagement with Scripture. They need to take up the cause of Christ to reach those without the only Savior. They also need economic upliftment through vocational training and micro-enterprise support.
Pray for spiritual renewal and unity among Mahar Christians, leading them to share Christ with those outside Christ’s Kingdom.Ask God to raise up faithful leaders and church planters from within the community.Pray for economic opportunities and sustainable development.Pray for boldness and protection as Mahar Christians share the gospel in challenging environments.
