The Kaiy or Taori-Kei people are a small indigenous group located in Papua Province, Indonesia. They inhabit the Lakes Plain area around the Kaiy airstrip on the lower Rouffaer River, specifically in Kaiy and Kokou villages. Their primary language is Kaiy, a Lakes Plain language spoken by only a few hundred people. The Taori-Kei are part of the New Guinea people cluster within the Pacific Islanders affinity bloc. Historically, the Taori-Kei have lived in remote, flood-prone regions, which has led to the relocation of many from the original Kai I village to Kai II (also known as Bakaije) and other nearby settlements. Their isolation has helped preserve their linguistic and cultural identity, though it has also limited access to modern infrastructure and services.
The daily life of the Kaiy people is shaped by subsistence living. Men and women engage in fishing, small-scale farming, and gathering forest products. Crops such as taro, yams, and maize are cultivated using traditional methods. The community also collects sago from swamp areas and may produce copra (dried coconut meat) for trade.
Family dynamics are rooted in clan structures known as fam, which are based on common male ancestry. These clans influence social organization, marriage customs, and leadership. The senior leader in a village is typically descended from the original settlers and holds a respected position. Marriages often follow traditional customs, including cross-cousin unions and bride-price or bride-service arrangements.
Celebrations are modest and may include Christian holidays such as Christmas and Easter, observed through communal gatherings and worship. Food is locally sourced and includes fish, root vegetables, and sago. Meals are shared within families and clans, reinforcing social bonds.
The Kaiy people primarily identify with Christianity, specifically Evangelical Protestantism. This tradition emphasizes salvation by grace through faith in Jesus Christ and the authority of Scripture. While a majority identify as Christian, the depth of spiritual engagement varies, and many communities lack access to discipleship resources.
There is no complete Bible translation in the Kaiy language, and ministry tools such as the JESUS Film are not available, largely because so few speak this language. This limits opportunities for spiritual growth and understanding of biblical teachings. In some areas, traditional beliefs may still influence daily life, though they are often blended with Christian practices.
The Kaiy people face significant challenges due to geographic isolation and limited infrastructure. Access to healthcare, education, and clean water is inconsistent, especially in flood-prone areas. Economic opportunities are scarce, and families rely heavily on subsistence activities.
Spiritually, the community would benefit from increased access to Scripture in their native language and culturally relevant discipleship. The absence of Christian media and teaching tools hinders spiritual maturity and understanding. Holistic ministry efforts that integrate physical development with spiritual renewal could greatly impact the Kaiy people.
Pray for the completion and distribution of Bible translations in the Kaiy language. Ask for the development of discipleship programs and the raising up of local leaders who can guide their communities in faith.
Intercede for improved infrastructure, including roads, schools, and clinics.
Lift up the Kaiy families and clans, asking for unity, resilience, and wisdom in navigating both traditional and modern challenges.
