Introduction / History

Tribes of nomads from the Arabian Desert were responsible for developing Arab culture. From there, they expanded across the Middle East and into North Africa, into what we now know as the Arab World.

Yemenis started migrating north during the pre-Islamic era. Many Arab families with long family trees in Syria, Lebanon, Palestine and Jordan trace their ancestry to that early migration from Yemen. The ongoing war has driven many Yeminis out of the country. Some have taken refuge in the UAE.

What Are Their Lives Like?

We know little about the lifestyle of the Yemeni Arabs who have migrated to other countries. While many of them probably adhere to their traditional social customs, their occupations and living conditions have drastically changed. In the UAE, for example, there are a few Yemeni Arabs who are wealthy businessmen, but most are common laborers. Many police officers in the UAE are Yemeni.

Despite Islamic teachings, there are four unequal classes among the Yemenis. The top-tier group of Yemeni Arabs gained their prestige from their family name or educational background. The second tier is the skilled artisan class. Next comes the rank and file, which makes up about 80 percent of Yemen's population. The lowest group performs duties considered "unclean." They are butchers, barbers or street sweepers. The higher groups do not associate with them socially.

Yemeni Arab society is patrilineal. They pass down inheritances through the males, consider children a family's greatest asset, and value women for their ability to bear children.

Although Muslims can have up to four wives, most marriages among Yemeni Arabs are monogamous. In the past, the parents arranged all marriages; however, it is becoming more acceptable for young people to choose their own mates.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Tai Thanh speakers have their own tribal, animistic religion. Such religions involve keeping the peace with the spirit world through offerings. One can be in good standing with the spirits and have good fortune, but if one doesn't give them what they want, one can face grave misfortune for their family members, crops, etc.

What Are Their Needs?

Their most urgent need is to place their faith in Jesus Christ.

Tai Thanh speakers need Christian resources like gospel recordings, the JESUS Film, and the Scriptures in their language.

Prayer Points

Pray for peace in Yemen that will allow displaced Yemenis to return home.
Pray for an end to foreign military intervention and blockades in Yemen.
Pray for the Lord to use the instability in Yemen to help Muslim Yemenis understand they need a Savior.
Pray for the small number of Yemeni believers to boldly proclaim the gospel to their families, friends and neighbors.
Pray for small, extended-family based home fellowships to multiply in the UAE.
Pray for more workers to enter the harvest via foreign assistance organizations.
