Mixe, Coatlan in Mexico

Introduction / History

The Coatlan Mixe are an Indigenous people of Oaxaca, Mexico, part of the larger Mixe nation who have long lived in rugged mountain and lowland regions, preserving their language and communal traditions despite Spanish colonization and outside pressures.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Most families practice subsistence farming of maize, beans, squash, coffee, and tropical crops, supplemented by weaving, ceramics, and music. Extended families share labor, and community service systems shape leadership. Festivals feature brass bands, dances, and communal meals of tortillas, beans, chili, and seasonal foods.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Many identify as Christian, often blending Catholic traditions with indigenous beliefs in nature spirits, ritual calendars, and ancestral guardians, reflecting deep spiritual continuity alongside biblical faith.

What Are Their Needs?

Sustainable agriculture, education in their heart language, and economic stability are vital for family well-being. Biblical discipleship, leadership training, and culturally sensitive church support can strengthen lasting faith and mission engagement.
