Introduction / History

The Songum are a small people group in Papua New Guinea's Madang Province, living inland near the Sepik River basin in villages such as Songum and nearby hamlets. Their identity has been shaped through long?standing village life in the forested river valleys of the region, where many small groups maintain distinct languages and cultures across generations. Their community is part of the broader New Guinea people cluster within the Pacific Islanders affinity bloc.

They speak the Songum language, a Trans–New?Guinea language of the Upper Yuat subgroup. This language is used day?to?day within the community and reflects a longstanding cultural presence in the area.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Songum live in rural inland villages where subsistence agriculture, fishing, and gathering from forests shape daily life. Families garden for staple foods such as root crops and bananas, and fishing in nearby waterways supplements their diet. Homes are built from locally gathered materials such as timber, palms, and thatch.

Because infrastructure is limited, travel beyond the community typically depends on footpaths or simple local watercraft rather than paved roads. Access to formal services such as healthcare and secondary schooling requires significant travel to larger towns. Extended family networks and neighbor cooperation are central to daily rhythms, as families work together on gardens, shelter maintenance, and caring for children.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Almost all of the Songum identify as Christian, but only a smaller portion are classified as evangelical believers, suggesting that while Christian affiliation is common, deep biblical understanding varies among individuals. Traditional spiritual beliefs involving unseen forces connected to nature and communal life may still influence how many interpret illness, success, and other life events alongside Christian identity.

In the Songum language, Scripture translation has started, but there are no known Bible portions, New Testament, complete Bible, audio Bible, or gospel film resources available in their language. This limits consistent access to God's Word in the language spoken within the community and hinders effective discipleship.

What Are Their Needs?

The Songum need a clear and faithful presentation of the gospel of Jesus Christ that leads to personal faith and ongoing spiritual growth grounded in Scripture rather than mixed with traditional beliefs. Where Christianity is present, deeper discipleship and solid biblical teaching are essential for spiritual maturity.

A major need is the completion and wide distribution of the Bible in the Songum language, so that individuals and families can engage directly with God's Word in the language of their community.

There is also a need for trained local leaders who can teach sound doctrine, disciple believers, and help establish strong, biblically grounded church communities within Songum villages.

Practically, improved access to healthcare, education, and transportation would support physical well?being and expand opportunities for spiritual and community development in their rural setting.

Prayer Points

Pray for the completion and availability of the Bible in the Songum language so the community can engage directly with God's sord.
Pray for faithful local church leaders to be raised up who can teach, disciple, and shepherd others.
Pray that traditional spiritual beliefs would be replaced by confidence in the truth of Scripture.
Pray for improved access to healthcare, education, and transportation to support overall community wellbeing.
