Semimi, Etna Bay in Indonesia

Introduction / History

The Semimi people of Etna Bay live in the Bird's Neck region of West Papua, Indonesia. Their language, Semimi, belongs to the Mairasi (Etna Bay) language family, a small Papuan family distinct from the larger Trans–New Guinea grouping.

Historically, the Semimi have been semi-isolated due to the geography of Etna Bay, with dense forests and coastal waters shaping their settlement patterns. Their culture is closely tied to subsistence living, and oral traditions preserve clan histories and connections to the land. Contact with outsiders has been limited, though missionary and linguistic survey efforts have occurred since the mid-20th century SIL International.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Semimi live in small villages along Etna Bay, relying on fishing, hunting, and sago cultivation for daily sustenance. Their homes are typically simple structures adapted to the humid coastal environment. Community life revolves around kinship ties, with elders guiding decisions and rituals. While modernization has reached parts of Papua, the Semimi remain largely rural, with limited access to healthcare, education, and infrastructure. Their language is still spoken in daily life, though pressures from Indonesian influence and regional trade are gradually introducing bilingualism.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The largest religion among the Semimi is Christianity, though evangelical presence is relatively small. Many Semimi identify nominally as Christian, but traditional animistic practices remain influential. Animism emphasizes spirits in nature, ancestors, and rituals for protection and prosperity.

Syncretism is common, with Christian identity coexisting alongside traditional beliefs. Ministry resources are scarce: there are no audio recordings, no JESUS Film, and limited Scripture availability in Semimi. This lack of resources hinders deeper discipleship and understanding of the gospel.

What Are Their Needs?

The Semimi people need greater access to Scripture in their heart language, as current resources are minimal.
