Introduction / History

The Nyabwa-Nyedebwa are a Kru people living in west-central Côte d'Ivoire, especially around Daloa, Issia, Vavoua, and Soubré. Their origins trace to older Kru migrations from present-day Liberia, settling in forest zones for farming and trade. The Nyabwa-Nyedebwa's primary language is Nyabwa.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Most families practice subsistence farming, growing rice, cassava, plantains, cocoa, and coffee, while women gather forest products and medicinal plants. Extended families often live close together, maintaining strong kinship ties. Festivals center on harvest, ancestors, and village unity, with drumming, dance, and shared meals of rice, sauce, and root crops.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Traditional ethnic religions centered on ancestral spirits and nature powers dominate, though Christianity is present in many villages. Spiritual life strongly shapes daily decisions, health practices, and social harmony. The Nyabwa-Nyedebwa have been partially reached with the Gospel with few evangelicals, but a significant number who identify as Christians.

What Are Their Needs?

Access to education, healthcare, clean water, and sustainable agriculture is limited. Scripture engagement in their heart language is still developing, and many lack consistent Christian teaching and discipleship.
