Introduction / History

Centuries ago the ancestors of the Myenes settled along the west coast of what is now Gabon and along tributaries. They were among the first West Africans to meet Portuguese ships. Because Gabon was once a French colony, they speak French as a trade language and their own language, Myene.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Myenes are known for their wood carvings. They put their skills to use both for wooden goods and for canoes. They have a long history of living off what they can find in the ocean and in the rivers. Fish is an important part of the Myene diet.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Myenes are primarily Roman Catholic or Protestant, but their traditional beliefs still linger. Before Catholic missionaries came, they worshipped their ancestors and nature spirits.

What Are Their Needs?

The Myenes need full devotion to Jesus Christ and his kingdom. They also have the potential to be Christ’s ambassadors to those who don’t know the only savior.

Prayer Points

Pray for a powerful work of the Holy Spirit in Myene families and churches, drawing many to put all their faith in Jesus Christ.
Pray for God to show himself powerful and loving by giving them a record high harvest.
Pray for the Myenes to become Christ’s ambassadors to unreached peoples in West Africa.
