The Mohawk are one of the Six Nations of the Iroquois Confederacy, also known as the Haudenosaunee, whose traditional homelands span northern New York and parts of southern Canada. Their language, Mohawk, is part of the Iroquoian family and remains an essential part of their cultural identity. Historically, the Mohawk were known as the "Keepers of the Eastern Door," guarding the eastern boundary of the Iroquois territory. They were skilled farmers, hunters, and traders, maintaining strong diplomatic and military influence among neighboring tribes and European settlers.
Following the American Revolution, their communities were divided by shifting borders and alliances, with some relocating to Canada and others remaining in New York. About 80 % of them now live in Canada. Despite centuries of displacement and assimilation pressures, the Mohawk people continue to preserve their traditions and language through community initiatives and education programs.
Many are bilingual, speaking both English and Mohawk, and take pride in preserving their cultural identity. Economic life varies, with employment found in tribal government, construction, small businesses, and education. Some families are involved in traditional crafts such as beadwork and basket making, which hold cultural and economic value.
The Mohawk maintain a strong sense of community through ceremonies, festivals, and extended family networks. While many enjoy the benefits of modern life, there remains a shared determination to uphold ancestral values, preserve the language, and pass down traditional wisdom to the next generation.
Before European contact, the Mohawk followed a traditional belief system centered on the Creator, harmony with nature, and gratitude for the gifts of the earth. Ceremonies such as the Midwinter Festival and the Great Feather Dance continue to express these spiritual values. With the arrival of missionaries in the 1600s, many Mohawk adopted Christianity—particularly Catholicism and later Protestantism—while still maintaining elements of traditional spirituality. Today, spiritual life among the Mohawk often blends Christian practices with long-held cultural ceremonies, reflecting both faith in God and reverence for ancestral traditions.
The Mohawk people face ongoing challenges related to economic opportunity, health care, and environmental preservation, especially concerning pollution along the St. Lawrence River. Culturally, there is a strong desire to preserve and expand the use of the Mohawk language among youth.
Spiritually, many Mohawk are seeking deeper meaning and purpose, and there is a need for a clear presentation of the hope found in Christ in ways that are sensitive to their culture and history. Healing from past injustices and reconciliation among families and communities also remain important areas of need. Encouragement, discipleship, and prayerful support from believers could greatly strengthen the growing number of Mohawk Christians and open new doors for the gospel.
Pray that the light of Christ would shine in Mohawk communities, bringing spiritual renewal and peace.
Pray that Christian workers would serve with humility and cultural sensitivity, building genuine relationships among the Mohawk people.
Pray for the translation, production, and wide distribution of discipleship and evangelism materials in the Mohawk language.
Pray asking God to raise of Christian leaders among the Mohawk that will faithfully preach and teach the Bible and shepherd their communities for God's glory.
Pray for the Mohawk Christians to share the gospel with their own people and the world around them.
