Introduction / History
The Ndemli people group is a group of the great family of Sawa which also includes the Douala, the Bakoko, the Abbo, some Bassa, the Bakwi, etc. They live in the coastal region of western Cameroon.
What Are Their Lives Like?
They are mainly subsistence farmers. Their main crops include palm oil, plantains, cassava, yams, coffee, corn, etc.
Their traditional dance is the Boubla, a dance performed around a wood fire. Their customary outfits are "Kaba" for women and "Sandja" for men. The main dish is the koki, made with seeds of beans or tchoba.
What Are Their Beliefs?
The Ndemlis are mostly Muslims. They practice Islam mixed with traditional practices. The Ndemlis believe the spirits of deceased ancestors and reincarnation affect their lives. During traditional ceremonies, they throw pieces of food and pour water on the ground for their deceased ancestors, believing they are present during these ceremonies.
What Are Their Needs?
The Ndemlis have difficulty accessing clean water, quality health care, quality education, and energy sources. They also need help modernizing their agricultural methods.
