Introduction / History

The Kumba people, also known as Satte, are an indigenous group living primarily in Adamawa State, Nigeria. They speak the Kumba language, which is also referred to as Sate or Yofo, and is part of the Adamawa branch of the Niger-Congo language family. The Kumba are part of the broader Adamawa-Ubangi people cluster and share cultural ties with neighboring groups. Their history is closely linked to the land and rivers of northeastern Nigeria, and their traditions reflect generations of adaptation to their environment.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Kumba families often live in extended households, with several generations sharing daily life and responsibilities. Agriculture is central to their livelihoods, with men and women working together to cultivate crops and tend livestock. Daily rhythms are shaped by the seasons, planting, and harvest times. Community life is vibrant, with neighbors supporting one another and gathering for important events. Festivals and celebrations mark the agricultural calendar and major life milestones, featuring music, dance, and storytelling that reinforce social bonds and cultural identity.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Kumba people primarily follow traditional religious practices, often described as Animism, which involves reverence for spirits and natural forces. These beliefs are woven into daily life and community events. There is also a Christian presence among the Kumba, and some families participate in church life and Christian festivals. In some areas, elements of Christianity and traditional beliefs may blend, but the influence of the gospel continues to grow. Scripture is available in a language they understand, providing opportunities for the message of Jesus Christ to be shared and received.

What Are Their Needs?

The Kumba people face ongoing challenges related to education, healthcare, and access to clean water. Many villages are remote, making it difficult to access resources and opportunities for development. Spiritually, there is a need for continued gospel witness and for believers to grow in faith and maturity. Community leaders and families benefit from encouragement and support as they navigate changes brought by modernization.

Prayer Points

Pray for the Kumba to have greater access to Scripture and gospel witness in their language.
Ask God to raise up mature believers who will share the love of Christ with their neighbors and beyond.
Pray for improved education, healthcare, and clean water in Kumba communities.
Pray that the Kumba church will become part of the mission force to less-reached peoples.
Pray for unity, peace, and hope to flourish in every Kumba village.
