Introduction / History

The Mbagani Kete people belong to the larger Kete subgroup within the Luba-Kasai cultural sphere of central DRC. They speak the Kete language, which is part of the Bantu family. Historically, the Mbagani trace their origins to a migration from the east during the sixteenth century, eventually settling in their present region within the Kasai area. Their history reflects significant cultural influence from southern neighbors such as the Lunda, and they narrowly avoided colonization by the Chokwe toward the end of the nineteenth century.

The Mbagani are also remembered for their connection to the now-extinct Mpasu group, from whom they inherited notable artistic traditions, including intricate masks used in initiation, healing rituals, and funerary contexts. While the Democratic Republic of the Congo hosts immense ethnic diversity, with more than two hundred ethnic groups nationwide, the Mbagani remain one of the distinct communities embedded within the broader Luba heritage.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Mbagani Kete communities live across parts of Kasai-Occidental and southern Kasai-Oriental provinces. They maintain small chiefdom structures in which local leaders guide community life and help manage disputes.

Carvers are well known for masks featuring large eye spaces, geometric patterns, and symbolic features, which link them to ceremonial traditions.

Christianity is the faith among the Mbagani Kete. Roman Catholicism historically shaped much of their spiritual landscape, and Christian teaching has become deeply rooted in community life. While Christian faith is dominant, traditional beliefs and ritual practices continue to appear in cultural ceremonies, particularly in rites of passage and healing traditions connected to their historic masking practices.
