The Mbagani Kete people belong to the larger Kete subgroup within the Luba-Kasai cultural sphere of central DRC. They speak the Kete language, which is part of the Bantu family. Historically, the Mbagani trace their origins to a migration from the east during the sixteenth century, eventually settling in their present region within the Kasai area. Their history reflects significant cultural influence from southern neighbors such as the Lunda, and they narrowly avoided colonization by the Chokwe toward the end of the nineteenth century.
The Mbagani are also remembered for their connection to the now-extinct Mpasu group, from whom they inherited notable artistic traditions, including intricate masks used in initiation, healing rituals, and funerary contexts. While the Democratic Republic of the Congo hosts immense ethnic diversity, with more than two hundred ethnic groups nationwide, the Mbagani remain one of the distinct communities embedded within the broader Luba heritage.
The Mbagani Kete communities live across parts of Kasai-Occidental and southern Kasai-Oriental provinces. They maintain small chiefdom structures in which local leaders guide community life and help manage disputes.
Agriculture forms the foundation of their daily survival, as families cultivate crops and engage in farming as their primary economic activity. Their villages rely heavily on local resources, and their livelihoods are shaped by seasonal rhythms, communal labor, and shared responsibilities.
Trade with neighboring groups supports them economically, though geographic isolation and limited infrastructure continue to restrict wider economic development. Within their social fabric, artistic expression—particularly mask carving—remains a significant expression of identity. Carvers are well known for masks featuring large eye spaces, geometric patterns, and symbolic features, which link them to ceremonial traditions.
Christianity is the faith among the Mbagani Kete. Roman Catholicism historically shaped much of their spiritual landscape, and Christian teaching has become deeply rooted in community life. While Christian faith is dominant, traditional beliefs and ritual practices continue to appear in cultural ceremonies, particularly in rites of passage and healing traditions connected to their historic masking practices.
Where the gospel is already well established, those who follow Christ have the opportunity to grow into a mature discipleship force. As they deepen in their walk with Jesus, believers among the Mbagani can be encouraged to reach beyond their own ethnic boundaries and serve as part of the global movement to bring the mercy of Christ to peoples with less exposure to the good news.
Many Mbagani families face challenges shaped by their rural environment. Access to schools, medical care, and stable infrastructure remains limited in parts of the Kasai region. Improved transportation, clean water access, and consistent healthcare services would strengthen family well-being and increase opportunities for long-term growth.
Cultural preservation represents another ongoing concern. As neighboring ethnic influences and modernization spread, younger generations risk losing touch with Mbagani language and artistic traditions. Supporting community efforts to maintain cultural identity can help preserve their heritage for future generations.
Spiritually, the Mbagani benefit from continued discipleship that roots daily life in biblical truth. With a strong Christian presence already in place, encouragement toward spiritual maturity, unity among local churches, and a vision for cross-cultural ministry can help them join the broader mission of sharing Christ with those who have not yet heard.
Pray for lasting stability across the Kasai provinces so that Mbagani communities may flourish without fear of conflict or disruption. Ask the Lord to bless farmers with good harvests, reliable rains, and protection over their land.
Pray for expanded access to education and healthcare, especially for children and vulnerable households.
Lift up the Mbagani believers who already know Christ, asking that their faith becomes deeply rooted and leads them to participate in God's global efforts to reach those without the hope of Christ.
Pray for local church leaders to shepherd their communities with wisdom and compassion, strengthening unity and spiritual growth.
Seek God's guidance for ongoing cultural preservation efforts so that the Mbagani maintain their historical memory, language, and artistic expressions while embracing the transforming mercy of Jesus Christ.
