Xwla in Togo

Introduction / History

The Xwla people speak Western Xwla Gbe, a language belonging to the Niger-Congo language family. It is a stable indigenous language spoken in Togo and Benin, used as a first language by all members of the ethnic community. However, it is not taught in schools, and its use is primarily sustained through oral transmission within families and communities.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Xwla people typically live in coastal and lowland regions, where they engage in fishing, farming, and small-scale trade. Their homes are often built from local materials such as mud bricks and palm thatch, and villages are organized around extended family units. Social life is vibrant, with music, dance, and storytelling playing a central role in cultural expression and community bonding.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Xwla people traditionally practice African religions, including ancestor veneration, spirit rituals, and reverence for natural forces such as rivers and forests. Christianity has been introduced through missionary efforts, and while some Xwla have converted, syncretism—the blending of Christian and traditional beliefs—is common. Seasonal festivals and communal ceremonies often shape religious life.

What Are Their Needs?

Xwlas face several challenges, including limited access to clean water, especially in remote villages. There are inadequate healthcare services, with limited clinics and a shortage of trained professionals.They have a low literacy rate due to limited educational infrastructure. As a result, there are few opportunities beyond subsistence farming.
