Introduction / History

The Gilima are a Sudanic-speaking people of northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo, traditionally settled in rural forest–savanna zones. Their history reflects migration, clan formation, and adaptation to riverine and agricultural environments amid regional conflict and change. Their primary language is Gilima.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Most Gilima families practice subsistence farming, growing cassava, maize, peanuts, and plantains, supplemented by fishing and small livestock. Extended families share work and childcare. Weddings, harvest celebrations, and church festivals mark community life. Meals center on cassava fufu, leafy greens, beans, and fish, common to northeastern Congo diets.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The majority identify as Christian, with strong Catholic and Protestant influence, yet traditional beliefs in spirits, ancestors, and healing practices often blend with church life. Scripture portions exist in their language, but discipleship resources remain limited.

What Are Their Needs?

Reliable access to healthcare, clean water, education, and Bible teaching is limited, contributing to preventable disease, illiteracy, and shallow spiritual growth. Peace, stability, and economic opportunity are essential for long-term flourishing.

Prayer Points

Pray for a faithful translation and wide distribution of the Scriptures, evangelism materials, and discipleship resources in the Gilima language. Pray that the Gilima Christians would lead their communities for God's glory, preach the Gospel, teach the Bible, plant churches, and make disciples of their own nation and beyond. Pray for healing from conflict, improved health services, food security, and access to education, that families may thrive in wholeness and hope.
