Introduction / History

The Wagenia Genya are a fishing people living along the Congo River near Kisangani, especially around the Boyoma Falls. For centuries they have practiced a distinctive communal fishing method using wooden tripods and basket traps anchored in river rocks, a tradition observed since at least the 1800s. Their primary language is Enya.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Life centers on the Congo River. Men construct and maintain fishing structures, while families share the daily catch. Knowledge passes from father to son. Families are close-knit, celebrating rites of passage such as circumcision near the river. Meals commonly include fish, cassava, plantains, and local vegetables, reflecting river and forest resources.

What Are Their Beliefs?

There are few Wagenia Genya evangelicals, but many who identify as Christians. The Wagenia Genya are influenced by long-standing missionary activity, while some blend Christianity with traditional beliefs in ancestors and spirits. The Wagenia Genya are in great need of spiritual renewal and commitment to biblical faith.

What Are Their Needs?

Spiritual growth, deeper biblical understanding, and active participation in God's mission are vital. Access to Scripture, discipleship, education, and healthcare would strengthen families and community stability.
