Introduction / History

The West Damar people live on Damar Island in Southeast Maluku Province, Indonesia. Their homeland is remote, with dense forests historically covering much of the island. Traditionally, they relied on sago as a staple food, and today they cultivate coconuts and cloves for cash income alongside subsistence crops like bananas, cassava, chilies, tomatoes, and papayas. Fishing also supplements their diet. The island is small—about 198 square kilometers—and its isolation has preserved unique cultural and linguistic traits. The West Damar language is part of the Austronesian family and is spoken in two villages on the north side of the island.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Life in West Damar villages is simple and community-oriented. Families often work together in farming and fishing, and coconut and clove sales provide modest income. Homes are typically built from local materials, and extended family ties are strong. Celebrations revolve around harvest times and Christian holidays, which are observed with communal meals and traditional music. Daily meals include rice, sago, fish, and vegetables, with coconut playing a key role in cooking. While modern conveniences are limited, the people value hospitality and mutual support.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The majority of West Damar people identify as Christian, though evangelical presence is small. Christianity came through missionary efforts in the past, but many still blend traditional customs with their faith. There is a need for deeper understanding of the Bible and a vibrant, Christ-centered community life.

What Are Their Needs?

The West Damar people need strong biblical teaching and discipleship to grow in faith and live out the gospel. Many lack access to Scripture in their heart language, and there are no audio or video resources like the Jesus Film available. Physical needs include improved healthcare, education, and sustainable economic opportunities. Isolation makes access to these resources difficult, and infrastructure is limited.

Prayer Points

Pray for the West Damar believers to grow in their understanding of God's word and share Christ with neighboring groups.
Pray for economic stability through fair trade of coconuts and cloves and for improved access to healthcare and education.
Pray that cultural traditions would align with biblical truth and strengthen family and community life.
Pray for them to put their faith in Jesus Christ rather than the spirit world.
