Introduction / History

The Ashingini, also known as the Kambari, are an ethnic group living mainly in Niger State with smaller communities in nearby Kebbi State. Their language belongs to the Kainji branch of the Niger-Congo family and includes dialects such as Tsishingini, Tsikimba, and Cishingini. Historical traditions indicate that their ancestors migrated from the region of present-day Borno before settling along the Niger River area, where communities developed through farming villages and local leadership structures.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Most Ashingini families live in rural villages and depend on agriculture. Common crops include millet, guinea-corn, groundnuts, and yams, which provide both food and small income. Village life centers on extended families and community cooperation during planting and harvest seasons. Traditional celebrations often involve music, dance, and communal meals. Staple foods are grain-based dishes served with vegetables or sauces prepared from locally grown crops.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Ashingini community includes both Muslims and Christians, with Islamic influence historically strong in parts of the region. A significant minority identify with Christianity, and portions of the New Testament and gospel media exist in related languages. Despite these influences, elements of traditional spiritual beliefs and cultural practices can remain present in daily life and community customs.

What Are Their Needs?

Greater access to Scripture, discipleship, and trained local church leaders would strengthen the growing Christian community. Economic development, education, and infrastructure improvements would benefit rural villages and help families support themselves more effectively. Cultural bridges between churches and local traditions would help the gospel take deeper root within the community.

Prayer Points

Pray that the message of Christ will continue to spread among Ashingini villages and that believers will grow in strong biblical discipleship.
Pray asking God to raise up faithful local leaders and evangelists. Pray for improved education, agricultural stability, and health services so families can flourish physically and spiritually.
Pray for the faithful translation and wide distribution of the Bible, evangelism materials, and discipleship resources in the Cishingini language.
Pray that the Ashingini believers will boldly and compassionately preach the gospel, teach the Bible, plant churches, and make disciples of their own people and beyond.
