The Mbete Bette-Bende are part of the wider Bette-Bendi ethnic cluster in Cross River State of southeastern Nigeria. Their language, Bete-Bendi, belongs to the Niger-Congo family and is widely used in homes and community life. Historical traditions indicate that the Bette people migrated through Central Africa before settling around the Obudu and Obanliku areas, where their language and culture became dominant in the region.
Most Mbete Bette-Bende families live in rural farming communities. Agriculture is the primary livelihood, with crops such as yam, cassava, and palm products grown for food and trade, and cocoa cultivation introduced in the twentieth century as a cash crop. Family life is strongly community-oriented, with elders playing an important role in decision making and preserving traditions. Cultural celebrations often include communal meals, music, and seasonal festivals connected with farming cycles.
Christianity is the largest religion among the Mbete Bette-Bende, and the New Testament has been translated into their language. However, traditional beliefs and respect for ancestors still influence daily life in some communities, blending cultural customs with Christian practice.
Greater biblical discipleship would help many believers grow in a deeper understanding of Scripture and develop mature local churches. Expanded access to Christian teaching resources in the Bete-Bendi language would strengthen faith and leadership. Economic development and improved education would support families in rural areas and open opportunities for younger generations.
Pray that Mbete Bette-Bende believers will grow in biblical discipleship and become a missionary force to neighboring groups.
Pray for improved education, agricultural stability, and opportunities for young people.
Pray that Christ's love will shape community life and draw many to a deeper faith.
Pray for the faithful translation and wide distribution of the Bible, evangelism materials, and discipleship resources in the Bete-Bendi language.
Pray that the Bette-Bende believers will preach the gospel, teach the Bible, plant churches, and make disciples of their own people and beyond.
