The Awin, also known as West Awin or Aekyom, are an indigenous people living in the remote lowland forests of western Papua New Guinea near the Indonesian border. Daily life centers on gardening, hunting, fishing, and small-scale trade. Families live in extended households, sharing labor and resources. Community celebrations include church gatherings, harvest feasts, and traditional singing and dancing. Common foods include sweet potatoes, taro, bananas, sago, fish, and wild game, prepared by boiling or roasting over open fires

Most Awin identify as Christian, primarily Protestant, though traditional beliefs about spirits, healing, and ancestral influence still shape daily life and worldview.

What Are Their Needs?

Access to quality education, medical care, and transportation remains limited due to isolation and rugged terrain. Spiritual growth and biblical discipleship are essential, so believers mature in faith and engage in sharing the gospel. Economic stability and sustainable agriculture training would strengthen family and community resilience.
