Introduction / History
The Arosi people inhabit the western region of Makira Island (formerly San Cristobal) in the Solomon Islands. They speak the Arosi language, a member of the Southeast Solomonic branch of the Austronesian language family. The language is phonemically written and features a rich structure of vowels and consonants. Historically, Makira was first recorded by Spanish explorers in 1588, and the Arosi were later studied in early ethnographies, notably by Fox in 1924.

Arosis live in small communities on a volcanic high island with lush terrain and mountainous regions. Their society traditionally emphasizes matrilineal descent, meaning lineage and inheritance are traced through the mother’s line. Social organization is village-based, with no overarching authority beyond local headmen. They engage in subsistence agriculture, fishing, and trade with neighboring groups. Their isolation has preserved many traditional practices, although modern influences are increasingly present.
What Are Their Beliefs?
Before Christian influence, the Arosi may have had a belief in a supreme being—an unusual trait in Melanesian cultures—though later research has questioned this claim. Today, Christianity is the dominant religion, and many Arosi identify with various Christian denominations. Traditional beliefs involving spirits and ancestral reverence may still persist in some areas, often syncretized with Christian practices.
