Introduction / History

The Ahamb are an indigenous people group of Vanuatu, living on the northwestern coast of Malekula Island, one of the most culturally and linguistically diverse islands in the country. Their identity is rooted in long?standing local tradition, clan relationships, and ties to specific villages along the coast. Their language, Ahamb, belongs to the Oceanic branch of the Austronesian language family, reflecting deep connections to other island communities across Vanuatu and the wider Pacific.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Ahamb live in small coastal villages where daily life is shaped by the sea, family ties, and subsistence practices. Fishing provides a key source of food, and gardens planted with root crops, bananas, cassava, and other produce form the backbone of their diet. The coastal environment influences how people travel, gather resources, and interact with neighboring villages.

Homes are typically constructed from local materials such as wood, thatch, and bamboo, and extended families often live near one another in closely knit village clusters. Their language is used in everyday communication within the community, while Bislama, the national creole language, is used for wider communication with people from other parts of the island and nation. Access to formal infrastructure such as healthcare and higher education is limited locally and often requires travel to larger population centers.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Most Ahamb people identify with Christianity, and church life plays a central role in community rhythms and celebrations. Despite this, traditional spiritual beliefs continue to shape how some individuals view the world. These traditional elements include belief in ancestral influences and spiritual forces tied to the natural environment, which can coexist alongside Christian worship and practice. As a result, spiritual life often reflects a blend of Christian forms and customary understandings rather than a purely biblical worldview.

There is no complete Bible translation in the Ahamb language, and portions of Scripture in Ahamb are limited. This restricts direct engagement with the full message of Scripture in the language most commonly used within the community.

What Are Their Needs?

The Ahamb need clear, faithful teaching of the gospel that leads to genuine understanding of and trust in Jesus Christ, moving beyond cultural or traditional identification with Christian forms.

A significant need is translation and distribution of Scripture in the Ahamb language so that God's Word is accessible and understandable to all ages in the way they best receive it.

There is also a need for faithful, biblically grounded local leaders who can guide believers, teach Scripture clearly, and disciple others within the community.

Practical challenges affect daily life as well. Limited access to healthcare, education, and reliable transportation constrains both physical well?being and opportunities for sustained community growth and discipleship.
